About Vinnie

Vinnie grew up in Mumbai, in a medical family and always aspired to be a cardiac surgeon. He graduated in 1992 from the prestigious King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Mumbai with 7 distinctions and a gold medal in Surgery. He further completed his Masters in General Surgery in 1995 followed by specialisation in Cardiac Surgery in 1998. He was the youngest in the country to also secure the National Diploma in Cardiac Surgery (DNB) at the time. Despite limited resources, he published widely in reputed scientific journals throughout his stay in India.

He travelled to Toronto in 1999 for a year's fellowship in adult cardiac surgery at Toronto General Hospital´╗┐. During this period he was also awarded the FRCS by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He later moved to UK and initially worked as a fellow in Southampton in 2000 followed by six years in the South Thames training program, London. He spent 4 years at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, a year at the Royal County Sussex Hospital, Brighton and a year at King's College Hospital, London. He completed his training in 2006 and was appointed as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with aortic interest at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital in October 2007.

On the surgical front, Vinnie has one of the largest volumes of practice at St. Thomas' Hospital, averaging 230 cases per year. This includes operations on heart valves, Coronary artery bypass grafting including total-arterial bypass grafting, operations on the aorta and all types of key-hole heart valve operations.

Key-hole Heart valve surgery

Operations on the Aortic valve, Mitral valve and combined heart valve operations are his areas of expertise. Although the majority of these operations are performed by a traditional approach in the UK i.e. compelte split of the breast bone, Vinnie's focus has been in developing key-hole heart valve operations for aortic valves to minimise the impact of surgery on the patient. He is currently the only surgeon in the UK who performs this operation without splitting the breast bone in the majority of his patients. He has now set up the Right anterior thoracotomy AVR program at St. Thomas' Hospital.

Trascatheter valves

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation started at St. Thomas' Hospital in 2008 and Vinnie has been a core member of the TAVI program since its inception. He has developed new techniques and led multiple research projects in this area; he is also an invited speaker in all major conferences in the field of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. He has also performed, on numerous occasions, demonstrations of newer TAVI techniques at these meetings.

Vinnie was Educational lead for five years and continues to train trainee cardiac surgeons, medical students (including overseas students) and surgical practitioners. He also holds training sessions in newer TAVI techniques and key-hole valve techniques for surgeons and TAVI teams from all over the world . He also supervises at least 4 A-level students every summer for a period of one or two weeks via work experience placements.
